🔭 Telescopes will be set up for viewing. Bring binoculars and/or telescopes
⭐ Junior Rangers between ages 7 to 14 are welcome to complete the Junior Ranger Night Explorer booklet and earn a badge.

Locals Summer Bird Walk
Birding is for everyone. All are welcome on our friendly and respectful Beachy Birder Adventures!
Celebrate the season and look for all your favorite coastal birds; grab your adventure buddy and join us on Saturday, September 19, from 8:00 – 10:00 am.
We will meet at the Life-Saving Service Station of Gateway National Recreation Area, Sandy Hook. We will walk on the paved, flat multi-use path and maybe a boardwalk trail or two for about two miles. Please dress for the weather, wear closed-toe shoes, bring water, snacks, a hat, and binoculars if you have them. We have 10 pairs of 8×25 birding binoculars for you to borrow as needed, and we will also have a spotting scope available.
Our outings are rain or shine, but if extreme weather occurs, we will reschedule for a more enjoyable experience.

NJ Lighthouse Challenge Weekend
Are you up for the Challenge?
Saturday and Sunday, October 17-18th, 8am-6pm
The Lighthouse Challenge of New Jersey is an annual event held on the third weekend of October. The challenge is to visit 11 lighthouse sites, 4 lifesaving stations, and 1 museum over the two-day weekend. The route covers the Atlantic Coast from Sandy Hook to Cape May and the Delaware Bay and River Coast from Cape May to Paulsboro. Take the challenge and learn more about these historic treasures of New Jersey. A $10 registration fee lets you collect a souvenir from each site and can be paid at the first site you visit. Please join us for a fun family weekend.
Sandy Hook is a great place to start the weekend! There are two official stops on Sandy Hook: the Sandy Hook Lighthouse and the Spermaceti Cove Life-Saving Station. Official Lighthouse Challenge merchandise, including t-shirts, hats, and pins, will be available for purchase at Spermaceti Cove Lifesaving Station. After visiting Sandy Hook, Twin Lights in Highlands is a perfect next stop, and they are offering a night climb on Saturday.

Clean Craft Series: Bottle Cap Fish Art
Help save the Earth! Stop by the Spermaceti Cove Lifesaving Station anytime from 12-3pm to join us for a recycling-based arts and crafts program. We will use discarded bottle caps, paint, and googly eyes to make fish and an ocean landscape. This program is completely free and available to all visitors. We’ll provide all the materials, but if you have any bottle caps you’re not using, please bring them! We hope to see you soon!

Paper Bag Jellyfish Craft!
Jellyfish can be found in the waters of New Jersey from late May to early August. Help us say goodbye to them by stopping by for our paper bag jellyfish craft! This program is completely free and open to all visitors. Paper bags, paint, and googly eyes will be provided. All you need to do is drop by the Spermaceti Cove Lifesaving Station (between lots D and E) anytime from 12-3pm on August 15th. We hope to see you soon!

Captain Peg Leg Larry's Lost Treasure: A Kid-Friendly Scavenger Hunt
Legend has it that pirates once infested the waters of Sandy Hook Bay…Drop by the lifesaving station store anytime from now until the end of summer to go on a FREE, self-guided, kid-friendly, walkable scavenger hunt! The hunt takes around 25 minutes and will take you on a .9 mile journey through the lifesaving station and the surrounding area. This is a great opportunity to explore Sandy Hook, entertain the kids, or just get outside. Join us to see if you can find Captain Peg Leg Larry’s lost treasure!
