We will meet at the Life-Saving Service Station of Gateway National Recreation Area, Sandy Hook. We will walk on the paved, flat multi-use path and maybe a boardwalk trail or two for about two miles. Please dress for the weather, wear closed-toe shoes, bring water, snacks, a hat, and binoculars if you have them. We have 10 pairs of 8×25 birding binoculars for you to borrow as needed, and we will also have a spotting scope available.

Our outings are rain or shine, but if extreme weather occurs, we will reschedule for a more enjoyable experience.

Let’s get birdy!

NJ Lighthouse Challenge Weekend

Are you up for the Challenge?

Saturday and Sunday, October 17-18th, 8am-6pm

The Lighthouse Challenge of New Jersey is an annual event held on the third weekend of October. The challenge is to visit 11 lighthouse sites, 4 lifesaving stations, and 1 museum over the two-day weekend. The route covers the Atlantic Coast from Sandy Hook to Cape May and the Delaware Bay and River Coast from Cape May to Paulsboro. Take the challenge and learn more about these historic treasures of New Jersey. A $10 registration fee lets you collect a souvenir from each site and can be paid at the first site you visit. Please join us for a fun family weekend.

Sandy Hook is a great place to start the weekend! There are two official stops on Sandy Hook: the Sandy Hook Lighthouse and the Spermaceti Cove Life-Saving Station. Official Lighthouse Challenge merchandise, including t-shirts, hats, and pins, will be available for purchase at Spermaceti Cove Lifesaving Station. After visiting Sandy Hook, Twin Lights in Highlands is a perfect next stop, and they are offering a night climb on Saturday.
