Friday Family Series - Become a Lifesaving Inventor!

Protecting Colonial Seabirds
SEABIRDS - SANDY HOOK’S SENTINELS OF THE SEA.
Because they rarely visit land, except while nesting on our beaches and isolated oceanic islands,
seabirds are a remarkable and threatened group of animals that we only occasionally encounter.
Vulnerable to pollution, overfishing and other human activities, their populations have been
crashing worldwide. These noble creatures, inhabiting challenging and unique environments,
demonstrate many fascinating survival techniques and behaviors, and are important indicators
of the health of our oceans, so are worthy of our attention and protection.
To learn more, we will visit the largest and most famous albatross colony in the world - Midway
Atoll - then will return to Sandy Hook for an update on our own local colony of seabirds.

Great Storms of the Jersey Shore
Referring to coastal storm protection efforts, oceanographers like to muse “The ocean always
bats last.”
In the 1800’s, local fishermen of Sea Bright warned builders to respect the protective
sand dunes that once blocked the view of new homes along the beach. And old-timers on
Staten Island used to caution newcomers: “Don’t build East of Hylan Boulevard” (The longest
street on the island.)
Join us to revisit some legendary storms of our coast, how they form, and their impacts on ways
we prepare for the next “BIG ONE” and what we can expect in the future.
